Dança em Rede

Originally from Goiânia (Brazil, 1984), MIRELLE MARTINS received her Bachelor Degree in Social Communication at Universidade de Brasília (UnB) in 2006.

She moved to São Paulo in 2008 to work in creative departments of advertising, branding and digital marketing agencies. Parallel to communication jobs, in 2010 Martins started to work as independent art curator and producer with sculpture, site specific and video art projects presented in the major art institutions of São Paulo/Brazil. 

Mirelle started to research dance and performance in 2013 at the GAGA Summer Intensive in Brooklyn-NYC, where she first met Shamel Pitts, the teacher of the course. They established an artistic partnership in 2015 with the first project “GAGA/Brazil” to promote contemporary dance workshops in the country and to produce Pitt’s first choreographic work in South America. 

“BLACK VELVET” (2016) introduced Mirelle to the stages and has been touring internationally since 2017 with live performances in the US, Brazil, Israel, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Singapore, Austria, Lithuania and Australia. 

The partnership between Pitts and Martins continued with the creation and international tour of “BLACK HOLE” (2018), where Martins also participated as costume designer; in 2019 as assistant choreographer of “VAI” – São Paulo Companhia de Dança (Brazil, 2019), and as associate choreographer in “HELP” by Claudia Rankine at THE SHED (New York City, 2020).

Currently Mirelle is one of the founder artists of TRIBE: the Brooklyn-based afrofuturistic arts collective where she also acts as creative director.
